Ultram, which is the brand name drug for tramadol, is an opioid-like drug used to treat pain. Ultram is also available in an extended-release form to treat pain for a longer period. When used properly and in the short-term, Ultram can relieve pain caused by multiple conditions including surgery and trauma. Ultram reduces pain by binding to opioid receptors in the brain. It can also reduce the perception of pain by preventing the reuptake of neurotransmitters such as norepinephrine and serotonin. Ultram can induce desirable effects such as euphoria, relaxation, sleepiness and pain relief. These desirable effects create a risk for addiction and abuse as the person may seek to use Ultram for non-medical reasons.

When Ultram was initially released to the market, it was described as an opioid with a low potential for abuse and dependence. This claim was because Ultram binds to opioid receptors in the brain with a weaker affinity than typical opioid drugs. However, Ultram addiction can occur when an individual uses the drug for a long period. There are physical, behavioral and psychological symptoms that accompany Ultram addiction. Some symptoms include cravings, tolerance, failure to meet major responsibilities and withdrawal when Ultram is not taken.

Similar to addiction to other opioids, abrupt discontinuation of Ultram can lead to adverse physical and psychological side effects. Not only are these side effects dangerous, but they increase the risk of returning to Ultram use in order to alleviate symptoms. Rehab is one effective option for Ultram addiction treatment.

Ultram Treatment Options

People struggling with addiction should consider inpatient or outpatient treatment. Proper treatment for Ultram addiction is integral to a successful recovery. Ultram use disorder is an opioid addiction and should be treated as such. Each person’s addiction and recovery is unique and requires the selection of the proper rehab program that can meet individual needs. Multidisciplinary approaches to recovery have proven to be effective, as addiction is considered to be a physical, mental, and emotional disorder.

Inpatient Rehab

Inpatient rehab is one option for recovery from Ultram addiction. Inpatient treatment allows for 24/7 access to care. It also helps prevent a recurrence of substance use because the client will have 24-hour supervision and no contact with their sources for Ultram. Inpatient rehab typically offers services such as medical management of withdrawal symptoms, individual therapy, group therapy, and recreational therapy. Withdrawal and detox from Ultram can be a dangerous and uncomfortable process. Individuals can experience flu-like symptoms, restlessness, hallucinations or paranoia. Having the support of medical staff can help alleviate some of these symptoms and support a safe detox from Ultram.

Outpatient Rehab

Outpatient rehab also represents a viable recovery option for Ultram addiction. Individuals with adequate support systems at home will generally benefit the most from outpatient rehab. There are several options for outpatient treatment that range from structured schedules to programs that offer more autonomy. Both options for outpatient treatment may offer psychiatric and medical services, as well as group therapy, with the benefit of being able to return home following treatment.

Aftercare

Following inpatient or outpatient therapy, aftercare treatment is crucial for maintaining recovery and sobriety. Both inpatient and outpatient programs generally offer options for aftercare. Aftercare treatment will most likely consist of group therapy for counseling and mutual support. Additionally, these groups aid in maintaining accountability for sobriety. Aftercare programs will also assist in developing a setback prevention plan that should be followed strictly to maintain sobriety.

Finding an Ultram Treatment Center in Washington or Oregon

Choosing the right treatment options and facility for Ultram addiction is an important task that can be very overwhelming because there are many options for drug rehab in Oregon or Washington. There are several factors you may want to consider when choosing a treatment facility for you:

  • Does the facility offer treatment options that will meet your needs?
  • Do you feel comfortable after taking a tour of the facility and meeting the staff?
  • Are the staff professional, helpful, and willing to meet your needs?
  • Does the facility offer treatment options for any co-occurring mental health issues that need to be treated?
  • Would someone who has participated in this program recommend the facility to you?
